RSS Bandwidth Issues Got You Down?
Permenant Link To: RSS Bandwidth Issues Got You Down?
You know it, I know it - RSS is great, both for users and publishers!
But it's not all a bed of roses.
One issue that seems to plague popular sites that offer an RSS feed: Bandwidth!
All it takes is a few 100 subscribers, each having their personal newsreader set up to poll your feed for updates every 1 - 5 seconds, and your bandwidth gets gobbled-up. It's like having several hundred visitors hitting your site every second (in addition to your normal Web traffic).
Bye-bye bandwidth!
Let me first go on record as saying that there's something really anal about needing to poll RSS feeds every 1 - 5 seconds. Sure, there are times when ever second counts, but not 24/7! That kind of obsessiveness seems to me like a heart attack just waiting to happen.
In any case, if you're experiencing bandwidth issues as a result of your feed(s) I wanted to let you know about a free service I was notified about over the weekend. It's called RSSCache.
I haven't tested the service, so I can't say too much about it reliability, but it looks promising.
